In German captivity, V německém zajetí, Jiří Beneš

The war memoirs of Jiří Beneš, nephew of President Edvard Beneš, were published six months after the end of the war and are exceptional in their content and the person of the author, who was persecuted for his family relationship with the president during the occupation. He was first arrested by the Gestapo in 1940. He was interned in Pankrác and released after a series of interrogations at Petschk’s palace. He was arrested for the second time in January 1943 and until May 1945 he was imprisoned mainly in the German concentration camps Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Dora, where he was employed as a slave in the production of secret German weapons V1 and V2. The book is a comprehensive and thorough documentary about the situation of prisoners in German concentration camps, it is also remarkable for its calm and factual interpretation. It captures in detail the specific inhuman treatment of prisoners, their torture and killing, as well as the overall horrific atmosphere of the extermination camps. The author’s question permeates the whole work: How did it happen that a leading, highly cultural European nation fell into such inhumanity?
“The war is over and time is slowly drying up tears. The Germans are subject to punishment. We who have experienced the German occupation and the survivors of the German concentration camps know that this is a well-deserved punishment, although many of us assumed that the punishment would be more severe during slavery. But over time, much is forgotten and it could happen that after years our children will look differently at the children of today’s Germans, and certainly the children of today’s Germans will only see punishment and will look to forget the guilt of their fathers and mothers. It is therefore necessary to provide evidence of how well below the level of predators German humans fell between 1939 and 1945.

Válečné memoáry Jiřího Beneše, synovce prezidenta Edvarda Beneše, vyšly již půl roku po skončení války a jsou výjimečné svým obsahem a osobou autora, který byl právě pro svůj příbuzenský vztah k prezidentovi v době okupace perzekvován. Poprvé byl zatčen gestapem v roce 1940. Byl internován na Pankráci a po řadě výslechů v Petschkově paláci byl propuštěn. Podruhé byl zatčen v lednu 1943 a do května 1945 byl vězněn především v německých koncentračních táborech Auschwitz, Buchenwald a Dora, kde byl jako otrok zaměstnán při výrobě tajných německých zbraní V1 a V2. Kniha je obsáhlým a zevrubným dokumentem o situaci vězňů v německých koncentračních táborech, je pozoruhodná i svým klidným a věcným výkladem. Zachycuje při tom detailně konkrétní nelidské zacházení s vězni, jejich týrání a zabíjení i celkovou děsivou atmosféru vyhlazovacích táborů. Celou prací prolíná autorova otázka: Jak se stalo, že přední, vysoce kulturní evropský národ, se propadl do takové nelidskosti?
„Válka se skončila a čas pomalu osušuje slzy. Němci jsou podrobeni trestu. My, kteří jsme prožili německou okupaci a přežili německé koncentrační tábory, víme, že je to trest zasloužený, třebas mnozí z nás předpokládali v době otroctví, že trest bude přísnější. Ale časem se mnoho zapomíná a mohlo by se stát, že po letech budou naše děti jinak hledět na děti dnešních Němců, a zcela jistě děti dnešních Němců budou vidět jen trest a budou hledět zapomenout na vinu svých otců a matek. Je proto třeba zajistit důkazy o tom, jak hluboko pod úroveň dravé zvěře klesl německý člověk v letech 1939 až 1945.
